What Can You Do To Improve Your Mental Health?

Advice from Ms.Sasha Haynes

How have you seen mental health affect the work and education progression of students?

“So mental health is a very very very serious topic for all. Not just for students but teachers and staff as well. Particularly for students since you asked about that I believe is a huge role in the progress and success in students academics. If you're not mentally stable and you have concerns, of course it will affect everything around you right you have to have the mental stability. So many things can contribute to that. If you don’t have the stability it warns of frustration, it warns the ability to stay focused, it warns you of just so many attributes that don’t allow you to meet the goals that you desire to meet. Even in my profession, If I don’t have that foundation of mental stability to be able to help or serve, it will be hard for me to focus. Academically how could you succeed; you’ll be in class struggling with your social and emotional aspect of life. How can you focus on your academics when you're not happy at home or how can you focus on your academics when you're battling with yourself? One thing is that the biggest mental fight is yourself because you're trying to overcome whatever those challenges are or what those stresses are that you have. So it plays a huge part, if you’re mentally okay then you can succeed, if not you most definitely will not be able to complete the tasks that’s before you, it’s a huge impact.”

How can we help that as students? How can we help that for ourselves or each other?
One thing I can say is it’s hard, especially when you’re on the outside looking in, but one thing I can say is to balance yourself, put things into perspective and prioritize things in your life. I think that it’s very important to understand that you can not control the things that are out of your control. I think that as human beings we try to handle so much, especially as students, you go through so much. You have family concerns, you have school concerns, you have peer pressure, people you're trying to impress with things of that nature. You have work that you have to complete then some of you have jobs, some of you have to be the caretaker for you mom, dad, sisters, and brothers for single parent homes. If you can understand what is in the reach of your power that you can control, control it. If you can’t it’s hard to say that as a physical human being to not be concerned but those are the things we have to tap into; It’s out of my concern I can not fix it,but is there a way I can maybe help the situation and find the resources I need to actually help the situation versus getting overwhelmed. A lot of times as humans we become overwhelmed because we want to help, but then when we fail at it that’s when we get discouraged. Those things contribute to mental stability because you begin to feel like a failure when really you're not a failure you just have to find a solution to all things.”
